On March 30th, members of AllegedlySpeaking.com were treated to a night of live horse racing at Bay Meadows by Evelyn and Louie. And if you didn’t know it before, Louie, just happens to work in the payroll offices there. Bay Meadows, which opened in 1934, is scheduled to close it’s doors forever on November 4th.

Friday nights at the track are called Friday’s Alive, and they feature live “cover” style bands that play between the races and dollar beers and hot dogs. Prompting Dad to treat everyone with several beers and dogs each.

Here Louie is explaining some handicapping techniques to us. Gabe and I then brought that knowledge to the paddock area (thats where they parade around the horsies 15 minutes before each race) where we put that information to the test. We also formed our own “scientific” methods of picking winning horses, based on size, muscular legs, and anxiousness.

It worked! Gabe and I both won. After our thrilling victory Gabe tracked down the jockey who provided us the extra pocket money, Luis Contreras who was riding Captain Skyhawk #7. Thanks again Luis, I plan on spending my $6 wisely.

Nic, Ta and Ethel had a great time too. Ethel spent her time at the paddock entrance evaluating horses using her own method. As each horse entered down the path, she stood at the edge of the railing calling their names. If a horse turned and made eye contact with her she took note. She then took the top 3 horses that appeared to be the MOST attracted to her and placed her Trifecta Box bet. Now I know what you’re thinking…NOT A CHANCE IN HELL CAN THAT WORK!

IT WORKED! Feeling lucky after only wagering $6 per bet all night, she decided to place an $18 bet and when all was said and done ended up winning $493. Evelyn was also a winner, she came up big with $320. Definately a case of lady luck here.

Gabe and I also made sure we didn’t leave until we met with Russel Baze, the winningest jockey in the world. This was only possible because Louie hooked the family up and got us into the Club House level, which put us near the jockeys, not to mention the full bar. This was definately a fun night. Thanks to Evelyn and Louie and the helpful staff at Bay Meadows for making this an evening that we won’t soon forget.

There’s only 2 more Spring “Friday Alive’s” left and then they’re history. We may do this again one more time…so keep checking back for updates and announcements. All friends and family who visit here are always invited. Maybe before the next trip to the track Ethel can present us with a PowerPoint presentation on how to pick the winners.
FAMILY NOTES:
-At the Holy Spirit Family Fun Walk and Run today, Jon placed 2nd in his age group. To his credit, his age group was 15-19, and the kid who won was 19 in full running gear and “JB” was wearing his oversized shorts and basketball shoes.
-My bib number at the event was 261, which happens to be the California Penal Code for rape. I thought that was interesting.
-Nic’s basketball team made it to the second round, then lost a close game before being eliminated in the L.A. tourney. Next year Nic.
-Jon and I saw the movie “Shooter” starring Mark Wahlberg today. Good flick…we give it 2 High Fives for great action sequences.
-Paul couldn’t make Friday Alive because he got sick after spending the day in So.Cal. on PS3 business. Hope you feel better. I’ll need a doctor’s note if you miss the next event though.
-Ta’s hair looks awesome.
-Ryan had his baseball game this morning. Unfortunately, only Elaine was able to be there. On the ride home, he mentioned that it makes him happy when more people go to his games. Next 2 games: Thurs 4/5 5:30 & Sat 4/14 12:00 Noon [9] Ryan’s Schedule
-Elaine ended up feeling a bit under the weather.
-Gabe won his football [10] game.
-Gabe and Elaine’s wedding website is still under construction.
-Taboo:FULL THROTTLE Episode 2 coming soon.
