Well that was one great wedding. And right now, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Gabe into our family. This evening he graduated from “Lover” status to “Husband” status with the help of two special words, “I will.” Gabe is a welcomed edition to our family. He brings with him web development and design skills that we need and will use wisely. After all, he did start this blog. Gabe also brings with him crazy enthusiasm to every occasion and/or board game, whether it’s called for or not.
Gabe had an awkward introduction to the family, but one that’s worth retelling. It was the first Christmas Eve at our house in 2003. The party was as good as any other family get together, with Gabe running a little late, because he was at his own family party first. But moments before he arrived, there was a domestic dispute that involved the male half running out and the female half running after him. All of this was witnessed by everyone and possibly started by one of us. As soon as that happened, the party came to a screeching halt, silent whispers everywhere, people on cellphones, some crying and some staring at the wall (no exagerration!). Enter Gabe, who comes through the front door with this huge homemade slide that he made for Ryan, it was gigantic at about 25ft long, with multiple humps, and designed to lean against stairs. And he had to borrow a truck just to get it to our house. But no one even noticed him entering. I remember telling him don’t worry, it’s not you, want something to eat?

Back to 7.7.07, the ceremony was beautiful and one couldn’t ask for a better looking day. Not too hot, with a cool breeze flowing through the gazebo, just picture perfect. At one point in the middle of the ceremony, a huge hairy Bumble Bee started buzzing around the groomsmen and began hovering around Ryan. I noticed Ryan tracking the bee with his eyes, twisting and turning and not taking his eye off the bug. Then he looked at me with his big worried eyes. I looked back at him to reassure him that, I, The Bee Killer, was also tracking the same bug.
I thought I would be burning up being in so many layers of tuxedo clothing, but I was okay. None of the guys seemed to be bothered by it either. But after sneaking a peek at Carol, I was started to sweat. Although Gabe and Elaine did not pick the recessional song (September by Earth Wind and Fire), I thought it worked well and gave the ceremony a Hollywood movie type ending, but it was really just the beginning of a new chapter in their lives (Click here to see).
The reception was also cool with a wedding party intro only Gabe could think up and Elaine could put up with. As each groomsman and bridesmaid couple were introduced, they were tossed a football and performed a touchdown celebration dance with Eye of the Tiger playing in the background. It was way cool and something I’ve never seen before.
The History of the “My Girl” Routine
The Routine was actually supposed to be the OKGO video that utilizes 8 treadmills. Lovers, groomsmen, and cousins were advised on June 8, that this would be the routine. But the logistics of getting the right type of treadmill coupled with management approval at the several fitness centers that Gabe and Alex had connections with would prove to be tough. Then on June 25, I got the email, “It’s final we are going with Temptations, My Girl”. Gabe sent video links and made DVDs so we could practice on our own. He also set up practices at Gerry’s Grill as well as in Hawaii after everyone arrived. It all really started to come together on the Thursday night/Friday morning before the wedding.
Also check out the “My Girl” routine from guest Justin’s point of view.
A great time was had by all.
